Alex Kozinski is a distinguished jurist and attorney with nearly fifty years of high-level experience. Most notably, Mr. Kozinski formerly served as a prominent and influential Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from November 1985 until December 2017, including as Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit from 2007 to 2014.
As a Ninth Circuit judge, Mr. Kozinski established himself as a leading mind in the field of intellectual property law. Mr. Kozinski was also known as a strong defender of the Ninth Circuit and its reputation for judicial independence. During his tenure, many of his clerks went on to clerk for the United States Supreme Court, nine in 2009-2013 alone.
As a young lawyer, Mr. Kozinski clerked for the Hon. Anthony M. Kennedy of the Ninth Circuit, and then for Chief Justice Warren E. Burger of the United States Supreme Court. Prior to his appointment to the appellate bench in 1985, Judge Kozinski served as Chief Judge of the United States Claims Court, 1982-85; Special Counsel, Merit Systems Protection Board, 1981-82; Assistant Counsel, Office of Counsel to the President, 1981 and Deputy Legal Counsel, Office of President-Elect, 1980-81. At the time of his confirmation by the United States Senate, Mr. Kozinski was the youngest federal appellate judge ever to have been appointed in the United States.
Mr. Kozinski received his Bachelor of Arts in economics from UCLA in 1972, and his Juris Doctorate from UCLA Law School in 1975, where he was the managing editor of the UCLA Law Review and was ranked first in his class.
